Plane brought down by wedding bouquet

(15 July 2009)

An Italian wedding ended in disaster after the bride's bouquet caused a plane crash.

The ceremonial flowers, which the bride and groom had arranged to be thrown to the female guests from a small plane, were sucked into the aircraft's engine, causing it to catch fire and explode.

The plane then plunged into a field next to a youth hostel in the Tuscan countryside.

Passenger Isidoro Pensieri, 44, who threw the bouquet from the plane, suffered head injuries and multiple fractures to both legs.

The pilot of the aircraft, 61-year-old Luciano Nannelli, and the hostel's 50 residents escaped unharmed.
