Ashes brings cheap flights to Australia

(16 July 2009)

British Airways and Qantas say they will slash fares from the UK to Australia if England's cricketers do well in the second test of the Ashes.

The airlines will set fares at whatever Australia score for their first innings, and the number of seats offered at that price will be determined by the amount of runs England notch up in response.

British Airways ran a similar promotion during the final test of the 2005 Ashes, when Australia scored 367 runs against England's total of 373, making 367 BA seats to Australia available at £373.

"If it is anything like the previous Ashes, we expect to be bowled over with interest from customers," said British Airways' spokesman Simon Brooks. "The Ashes is a highlight in the sporting calendar, and now there is an extra reason to get behind your team."

The discounted economy seats will go on sale on 21 July.
