Nude hiking trail for German naturists

(24 September 2009)

Germany is launching a new hiking trail for tourists who like to walk in the nude.

The 18km (11-mile) route runs through the Harz mountains in central Germany, between Dankerode and the Wippertalsperre, near Leipzig and is receiving praise for giving nudists an opportunity to express themselves more freely.

Jeanette Schuchmann, Deputy Director at the German National Tourist Office for UK & Ireland said: "Walking is a passion shared by many nationalities. Nudism is an expression for many a liberated mind in many countries."

Although the nudist track doesn't officially open until May 2010, it's already been tried out by some enthusiasts.

A sign has been put up warning those averse to naturism that they might prefer to go elsewhere. "If you don't want to see people with nothing on then you should refrain from moving on," it reads.

Heinz Ludwig, who runs a nearby campsite and led the project to create the nudist trail, overcame some local protests by pointing out the trail's potential boost for tourism. "I think it's a great way to promote tourism here," he told Bild newspaper.
