Foreign Office advises against travel to South Pacific islands

(02 October 2009)

The Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga and has issued a warning to holidaymakers heading to Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, following the recent tsunami, earthquakes and typhoon

At least 149 people have died on Tonga and the Samoan islands, including a two-year-old British boy.

In Sumatra, at least 1,100 people have died and hundreds of buildings have collapsed in and around the city of Padang, close to the epicentre of the earthquake, while reports of looting and violence have emerged.

Meanwhile, holidaymakers in the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have been encouraged to register with the Foreign Office after Typhoon Ketsana struck Cambodia on Wednesday and the Philippines last weekend.

Weather forecasts suggest that a new, larger typhoon could make landfall over the weekend. Travellers are advised to monitor the situation at www.tropicalstormrisk.com.
