Egypt soars in half-term holidays league
(22 October 2009)Egypt has emerged as one of the top destinations for this October's half-term holidays.
Half-term holidays to Sharm el-Sheikh have increased by 142% according to the Co-operative Travel.
This result may be linked to an increase in the numbers of cheap holidays to Egypt, with a family holiday for four costing about a fifth less than last year.
The strength of the pound against the euro has fallen to the lowest rate in six months, which may have also contributed to the shift in destination choice for families.
The study shows destinations such as Spain are less popular than last year due to the weak exchange rate.
Mallorca, the family favourite last year, has been knocked off the top spot into fourth place.
Top 10 Family destinations for October 2009 half-term holidays :
1. Tenerife, Spain
2. Dalaman, Turkey
3. Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt
4. Mallorca, Spain
