For a journey out into the real Florida, head to one of Boggy Creek's two locations in Kissimmee for their half-hour airboat ride around one of the local lakes, taking in the alligators and other animal life of the area. Better still, try their one-hour night tour when they go out to find 'gators in the dark - and their eyes glow red!
An exclusive swim-with-dolphins park next door to SeaWorld, this is available to just 1,000 guests daily and features realistic marine environments and other animal encounters as well as a laid-back high-class resort style.
An aviation-themed museum with a difference, this one-off attraction just south of Kissimmee offers a clever ‘immersion experience' into the history of flight, with flight simulators, an extensive vintage aircraft collection and fascinating behind-the-scenes tours. Stay for lunch or dinner at their lovely Compass Rose 1930s vintage diner.
Just a 50-minute drive east of Orlando, the home of NASA offers daily bus tours of the space centre, static and hands-on exhibits, astronaut encounters and giant-screen film shows. The attraction is primarily known as the home of the Space Shuttle, where spectacular launches can be viewed from a safe distance. The centre has been pioneering space exploration since the success of the Apollo lunar programme in the late 1960s. Visitors can also tour the Apollo/Saturn Visitor Center to see an actual Saturn V moon rocket, which stands a staggering 111m (363ft) high, and experience Astronout Encounter, an interactive show hosted by real astronauts. The newest attraction, the Shuttle Launch Experience, simulates the sights, sounds and sensations of a launch.
SeaWorld Orlando is the most popular marine theme park in the world. It offers dolphin and whale shows, aquariums and other animal habitats, rides and live entertainment. Opened in 2008, Aquatica is SeaWorld's entry in the growing list of Orlando swimming-oriented water parks, this one boasting live fish and marine mammals. Terrors of the Deep is an underwater ride past live sharks, eels, pufferfish and lionfish from the safe environment of an acrylic tunnel, whilst braver visitors can experience Journey to Atlantis, an 18m-high (60ft) roller coaster ride through a large-scale version of the mythical underwater city. Shows include the Cirque de la Mer (Circus of the Sea), featuring athletes, acrobats, singers and dancers together with comedy based on South American folklore. Children will particularly enjoy games such as Shamu's Happy Harbor, where they can explore a tropical paradise incorporating ball pools, slides, water mazes and tunnels.
Another resort development (although only a 10th the size of Disney), Universal Orlando offers more theme parks, resort hotels and a CityWalk nightlife and shopping district. It also owns the nearby Wet 'n Wild water park and recently opened the eagerly awaited Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Inspired by JK Rowling's much-loved characters, the adventures of Harry Potter come to life at Universal Orlando. Enjoy hair-raising thrills on the Dragon Challenge or Flight of the Hippogriff rollercoasters, explore the corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, visit Dumbledore's office, encounter magical creatures and snap up the latest movie prop replicas at one of the park's on-site stores. A must for Potter fans of all ages.
The world's largest theme park, Walt Disney World Resort, covers a space twice the size of Manhattan, delivering the Disney promise of magical escapism and thrilling rides. It is divided into four theme parks, alongside water parks, restaurants, theatres and hotels. The best-known of the theme parks is the Magic Kingdom, which provides traditional Disney rides and attractions and allows visitors to meet their favourite Disney characters. Disney's Animal Kingdom is an animal park, where visitors can learn about the animal kingdom, enjoy shows such as the 'Festival of the Lion King', and go on an animated jungle trek or African-style safari. Disney-MGM Studios is a Hollywood-inspired theme park featuring rides, shows and tours of Hollywood sets, both real sets and reconstructions, including a children's playground adventure based on the film 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids'. Epcot is a science-based park which explores the earth's natural phenomena and the human anatomy, as well as taking visitors on virtual trips around countries such as China and France (in World Showcase) and offering a glimpse into the technology of the future (in Future World).
