Money & duty free for Federated States Micronesia

Currency information: 

The US Dollar (USD; symbol US$) is the official currency. Giant stone money remains in use on Yap, but not for ordinary transactions or any that are likely to involve visitors. Dollar = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of US$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in denominations of US$1 and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.

There are several US FDIC insured banks operating (although there are no banks on Chuuk).

Credit cards: 

Most major credit cards are accepted at big visitor-orientated businesses.

Travellers cheques: 

Exchanged at the larger hotels and businesses.

Banking hours: 

Mon-Thurs 1000-1500, Fri 1000-1800 and Sat 0900-1200.

Currency restriction: 

There are no restrictions on the import of local and foreign currencies. The export of sums exceeding US$5,000 must be declared on departure.

Federated States Micronesia duty free

The following goods may be taken into the Federated States of Micronesia without incurring customs duty by travellers aged over 18 years and above:

• 600 cigarettes or 454g of cigars or tobacco.
• 2L of alcoholic beverages (over 21s only).
• A reasonable amount of perfume for personal use.

Banned imports: 

Firearms and ammunition. Plants and animals must be declared and will be subject to restrictions.
