Shopping in Perth

Boundless shopping opportunities exist in Perth.

Key areas:

Hay Street and Murray Street pedestrian-only malls ably replicate the best high street shopping. Historic King Street has designer boutiques and galleries selling Aboriginal art. Shopping is one of the main attractions of Fremantle, with plenty of fashion boutiques, bookshops and craft shops to browse. Fremantle Markets, 84 South Terrace, are WA’s oldest markets, an undercover labyrinth of clothes, souvenirs and produce. Open every weekend Friday to Sunday.

Popular Perth souvenirs include Western Australian wine, gemstones, sheep skin and indigenous art. The best commercial showcases to obtain authentic Aboriginal art are Indigenart, 115 Hay Street, Subiaco, and Creative Native, 32 King Street.

Markets:

The Subiaco Pavilion Markets, 2 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, open Thursday to Sunday, selling jewellery, pottery, giftware, clothes and art. Galleria Art & Craft Markets, Art Gallery and Museum Concourse, Perth, are European-style markets open Saturday and Sunday 1000-1700.

Shopping centres:

Perth's central shopping area is bound by the Hay Street and Murray Street malls and the Forrest Chase complex. Major department stores Myer and David Jones, a number of historic arcades, fashion franchises, and duty-free shops are found here. The many jewellery stores in this precinct sell Australian precious gemstones, such as the famous pink Argyle diamonds, Broome pearls and Kalgoorlie gold.

Opening hours:

Department stores and many other shops in the city centre are open seven days a week. Shopping hours are generally 0900-1700 Monday to Thursday and Saturday. Late night shopping is normally Friday until 2100. Don’t be surprised if stores outside the city centre or tourist areas aren’t open on Sunday.

Tax information:

Prices include GST (goods and services tax). Tax-free items may be purchased by shoppers with an international passport and onward ticket out of Australia.
