Restaurants in Phnom Penh
Restaurants in Phnom Penh are burgeoning and you won't have any trouble finding somewhere to suit your taste or budget.
The Phnom Penh restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over US$25)
Moderate (US$15 to US$25)
Cheap (up to US$15)
These Phnom Penh restaurant prices are for a three-course meal for one including tax and service.
Hagar
Make sure you have a hearty appetite if you try this restaurant as the lunchtime buffet is superb and you won't break the bank. You won't be able to resist going back again and again for the fresh salads, spicy soups, Asian and Western dishes. Dinner is just as good with hearty portions served. Even better, this restaurant employs disadvantaged women so that they can learn a skill and support their families.
Frizz
In an easy-to-find location just behind the Royal Palace, this long-term favourite serves much-loved Cambodian dishes and some western cuisine for breakfast and lunch. Make sure you try one of the best dishes in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian national dish, amok steamed coconut fish with turmeric sauce and spices. Frizz is also the venue for a cookery school, so diners can learn how to cook what they have just eaten.
Malis
Treat yourself at this fine Cambodian restaurant which has served some of the world's high flyers. Connoisseurs will enjoy the beautifully presented traditional Cambodian dishes, served with a twist. The food uses the freshest ingredients, sourced locally, such as kampot crab with green pepper. Savour the food in an elegant setting on the terrace, by the water garden or in the air-conditioned restaurant.
Pyongyang
If you are looking for somewhere rather quirky to spend the evening, you couldn't do any better than Pyongyang, the North Korean-owned restaurant. Not the most atmospheric of places as the large dining room is brightly lit, but you will be entertained by the North Korean waitresses dancing and singing to rousing, patriotic songs as you sample cold noodles and kimchi (traditional Korean dish) served with rice.
Le Liban
Set in a delightful villa, diners either eat in air-conditioned comfort or on the terrace in lush tropical gardens with the cooling sound of fountains. Choose between traditional hot or cold Lebanese mezzes and then retire to the rooftop bedouin bar for after-dinner drinks as you puff away on a shisha water pipe. Great for either an intimate meal or with a group of friends.
Friends
You will be surprised at the high standard of food served here and the excellent service at this restaurant, which trains street children in order to give them jobs skills. The food served is a selection of Asian and Western-style tapas. This is a great, fun place to eat and to give something back as the income earned here goes to the charity so that they are less dependent on donors.
Topaz
One of Phnom Penh's finest restaurants popular with business people and diplomats, serving a mix of French and Thai cuisine and boasting an excellent wine cellar. Topaz is contemporary and elegant with stylish, wooden floors, pastel colours and crisp white tablecloths, and is decorated in works of art by new artists. Sample the red tuna tartare in the smart dining room or on the open-air terrace shaded by a luxurious garden.

The Riverhouse
Refined restaurant serving Khmer and French cuisine in a French colonial building with open-air terrace overlooking the Tonle Sap River. The décor is a blend of Asian and European style and diners can choose between the indoor air-conditioned or open-air terrace. Popular with residents, tourists and visiting businessmen so reservations are recommended. Make sure you save room for the sweet sago tapioca dessert.
Foreign Correspondents' Club of Cambodia
A must for all visitors to Phnom Penh, with its casual open-air dining overlooking the Mekong River and an excellent choice of Asian and Western cuisine. An old favourite on the dining scene, it serves hearty staples such as fish and chips and wood-fired pizza as well as delicious Asian fusion meals. As most visitors to the city stop by here at some stage, it is worth making a reservation if you want to eat here.
