Restaurants in Porto

Eating out is a way of life in Portugal, and the wide choice of restaurants in Porto thoroughly reflects this, offering a great choice of dining options at all levels. Fresh and salted fish (bacalhau) is strong point, as, for the less squeamish, is the local tripe speciality.

The Porto restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over €60)
Moderate (€20 to €60)
Cheap (up to €20)
These prices are for a three-course meal for one and include tax, service and half a bottle of house wine or equivalent.

Churrascão do Mar

Price: Expensive

Elegantly housed in a former manor house, this restaurant specialises in Brazilian style cooking, particularly grilled fish and seafood served with South American spices and sauces. It's closed on Sundays, but on any other day of the week, it will offer free transport to and from your hotel if you need it.

Telephone: (22) 609 6382.

Bibóporto

Price: Cheap

Economical restaurant serving all the local specialities from bacalhau (salted fish) to a range of meats and poultry. Situated in the centre of town, it's convenient for all the main attractions. There is a large outdoor eating area as well as the internal section, and this can be very pleasant in the right weather.

Telephone: (22) 208 8199.

SaborXpresso

Price: Cheap

Located near the Clérigos Tower, and offering a good choice of petiscos (Portuguese tapas) as well as a choice of pastas, wraps, meat dishes and fish, SaborXpresso is ideal for a light lunch or dinner. It also offers fixed price set menus including a choice of drinks. The simple décor reflects its prices – essentially it's an upmarket café, but it fits a useful niche.

Al Forno Baixa

Solar Moinho de Vento

Price: Moderate

This is a typical Porto restaurant serving local specialities in the traditional way. The fish soup, baked codfish and the Oporto-style tripe are all delicious and served in generous portions, but lighter meals, such as tapas and petiscos (Portuguese tapas) – including the delicious pimentos de padrón (fried green peppers) are also available. The queen of fado music, Amalia Rodrigues, once performed here.

Telephone: (22) 205 1158.

Gambamar

Price: Expensive

High quality centrally located traditional style eatery offering a wide variety of meat, fish and shellfish dishes prepared in the Portuguese style. Indeed, the menu choice is so wide that it's sometimes easier just to pick the dish of the day, which changes every day. Gambamar is also handily located for the main nightlife district, so it's an ideal starting point for a night out.

Meson de Tapas

Price: Cheap

An excellent place for a quick bite to eat or a more extensive meal, the Meson de Tapas is located in the basement of the El Corte Inglés shopping centre in Vila Nova de Gaia immediately south of the Douro, so it's handy if you need a bite while on a shopping expedition. It offers a wide selection of genuine and very flavoursome Spanish tapas as well as larger dishes.

Address: Avenida da Republica 1435, Porto, Portugal
Telephone: (22) 377 3111.

Dom Tonho

Price: Expensive

The most expensive restaurant on the Porto riverfront, Dom Tonho is also the best. The eatery of choice for prominent guests to the city (from Fidel Castro to Jacques Chirac), this elegant and modern restaurant serves up some of the best food in Porto. The superb cuisine is mainly local and regional, and includes bacalhau (salted fish), Porto-style tripe with beans, and an excellent fish selection.

Address: Cais da Ribeira 13-15, Porto, Portugal
Telephone: (22) 200 4307.

Chez Lapin

Price: Moderate

A rustic restaurant on the quayside in Porto, Chez Lapin serves up hearty local fare in a warm, cosy atmosphere. Prices are reasonable, the local dishes are all good, but unusual – salt cod cooked with octopus is uncommonly good, as is the restaurant's take on mixed fish stew. The riverside location is great, and not surprisingly, it is very popular.

Address: Rua dos Canastreiros 40-42, 4050-149 , Porto, Portugal
Telephone: (22) 200 6418.
