The largest airport in Puerto Rico and a key gateway to and from the USA, San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is a short distance outside the island’s capital, San Juan. Major upgrades to the airport have been under way since 2006, with more than US$400 million being invested in the improvement and expansion of its facilities, including a new terminal: Terminal A.
A tourist information office is located in Terminal C (tel: (787) 791 1014) and a Traveller’s Aid desk can be found on the first level of Terminal D.
Four of the concourses (named terminals by the airport) are connected internally, while Terminal A is in a separate building, a short walk from the other terminal complex.
Baldorioty de Castro Avenue runs west from San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport past the Isla Verde, Ocean Park and Condado resorts into Old San Juan.
There is a ground transportation information desk at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which gives information and books tickets for all types of travel.
Bus: Regular local buses (www.dtop.gov.pr) and airport shuttles run to San Juan, where there is a ferry service from Pier 2 across the bay to Catano. The journey time to San Juan is about 45 minutes.
Taxi: Taxis are available from the first level of each terminal (journey time to San Juan: 30-45 minutes). Puerto Rico has both ordinary taxis and taxis turisticos – the latter, which are painted white with a logo, have a special knowledge of tourist areas and charge set rates depending on zones.
There is a bank on the second level (Departures) of Terminal D. ATMs can be found in all terminals.
There is a post office on the first level of Terminal D (Arrivals). Public telephones are located throughout the airport.
A concentration of restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets can be found on the second level (Departures) of Terminals B, C and D; snack bars are available in all terminals and at some gates.
Shops are also mainly on the second level of the main terminal complex (Departures). Duty-free shopping is available at gate 9 and between gates 2 and 3.
Baggage handling assistance and porter facilities can be found in the main terminal building.
Facilities for frequent flyers and those on business are located at the American Airlines Admiral's Club in Terminal D, including free local calls, photocopying and fax service and FedEx drop off. Other executive lounges include the Delta Airlines Crown Room in Terminal B and the United Airlines President's Club in Terminal C.
Meeting space and a business centre are available in the San Juan Airport Hotel (tel: (787) 791 6000) and at the Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort (tel: (787) 791 0404; www.marriott.com), which has four meeting rooms and a fully equipped business centre.
Facilities for the disabled include lifts, ramps, people movers, TDD telephones, disabled toilets and dedicated parking spaces. Travellers should contact the Traveller’s Aid desk on the first level of Terminal D for assistance, but passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should contact their airline prior to travel.
Long- and short-term parking (around 2,000 spaces) is available in the multistorey car park adjacent to the terminals.
