Major upgrades to the airport have been under way since 2006, with more than US$400 million being invested in improvement and expansion of facilities, including a new terminal, which is yet to open.

Driving directions:
Baldorioty de Castro Avenue runs west from San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport past the Isla Verde, Ocean Park and Condado sectors (tourist areas) into Old San Juan.
Public Transport
Public transport road:
Bus: Regular buses (www.dtop.gov.pr) and airport shuttles run to San Juan, where there is a ferry service from Pier 2 across the bay to Catano. The journey time is about 45 minutes.
Taxi: Taxis are available from the first level of each terminal (journey time to San Juan: 30-45 minutes). Puerto Rico has both ordinary taxis and taxis turisticos that have a special knowledge of tourist areas; these are painted white with a logo and charge set rates depending on zones.
There is a ground transportation information desk at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which gives information and books tickets for all types of travel.

There is a bank on the second level (Departures) of Terminal D.

There is a post office and telephones on the first level (Arrivals).

There are restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets on the second level (Departures) in Terminal D and C; snack bars are available in all terminals and at some gates.

Shops are also located on the second level (Departures). Duty-free shopping is available at Gate 9 and between Gates 2 and 3.

Disabled facilities:
Facilities for the disabled include lifts, a ramp, people movers, TDD telephones, disabled toilets and disabled parking spaces. Assistance is available to disabled travellers; travellers should contact the Traveler’s Aid desk on the first level of Terminal D. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should contact their airline prior to travel.
Car parking:
Long- and short-term parking (around 2,000 spaces) is available in the multi-storey car park adjacent to the terminals.

Car hire companies at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport include: Avis, Budget, Charlie, Dollar, Hertz, National and Thrifty. Desks are located on the first level of each terminal. The companies can also be contacted via the courtesy telephones in the arrivals area.
