Restaurants in Santiago de Compostela

Galician cuisine (cocina gallega) has a reputation for simplicity and excellence, with a strong emphasis on the quality of its raw materials over culinary technique. Santiago de Compostela is the perfect place to discover it. There’s a strong emphasis on seafood, with pulpo (octopus), percebes (goose barnacles) and vieiras (scallops) as specialities. Galician white wines are very good, especially the aromatic albariño.

The Santiago de Compostela restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over €100)
Moderate (€50 to €100)
Cheap (up to €50)
These Santiago de Compostela restaurant prices are for a three-course meal for two or its tapas equivalent with a standard bottle of wine.

El Pasaje

Price: Moderate

The main pedestrian street, Rúa Franco, is atmospheric and lined with octopus-and-scallop eateries but many of them keep more of an eye on passing tourists than on the quality of the cuisine. Not so at this venerable spot, where the seafood is of excellent quality. Cigalas (Dublin Bay prawns), vieiras (scallops) and oven-baked fish are all delicious here.

Restaurante Vilas

Beautiful décor, excellent food and friendly service have established Vilas as a perennial favourite in Santiago de Compostela. The speciality is seafood, and the octopus is superb. The tripe is another favourite. This is a Santiago classic, and bookings are recommended.

O Beiro

Replete with wines from all over the peninsula, this cheery place near the cathedral makes a fine refuge from Santiago’s regular showers. Head for the stone-flagged bar out the back, and grab one of the several hundred bottles on offer. Accompany it with free tapas of local cheese.

Marte

Price: Cheap

There’s no-nonsense, home-style Galician cuisine to be had at this central restaurant in Santiago de Compostela, including many great-value fish and seafood dishes. There are a couple of recommended daily lunch set meals too.

Cre-Cottê

Price: Cheap

Situated in La Casa da Conga, this is a cosy restaurant in a century-old building on the Praza da Quintana (next door to the cathedral) with beautiful views of the historical city. Crepes are a speciality here (savoury or sweet), but other dishes are available, including salads, plates of cheese or ham, kebabs, and fish or meat dishes. There is a good-value menu of the day.

Casa Marcelo

Price: Expensive

Marcelo Tejedor, the chef and owner of this Michelin-starred restaurant in Santiago de Compostela - just below the cathedral square - is the new generation of Galician cuisine. Eating at Casa Marcelo is an act of faith because there is no à la carte, and the only option is the daily changing tasting menu. Marcelo is the head of Nove, a group of Galician cooks who are trying to renew the Galician gastronomic scene by focusing on the products more than on new fancy techniques.
