Money & duty free for Serbia
The official currency in Serbia is the Serbian Dinar. Serbian Dinar (RSD; symbol Дин.) = 100 paras. Notes are in denominations of Дин.5,000, 1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of Дин.20, 10, 5, 2 and 1.
International credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants in Serbia. Diners Club and American Express are not so widely accepted.
Although acceptable in theory, in practice these can be very hard to exchange. It is advisable to take hard currency and credit or debit cards.
Mon-Fri 0800-1900, Sat 0800-1500. Some are open on Sunday.
The import and export of local currency must not exceed €10,000 or equivalent. The import and export of foreign currency is unlimited.
As elsewhere in the ex-Yugoslav republics, the most frequently exchanged currencies are the Euro and US Dollar (Pound Sterling is rarely used). Money should be exchanged through official exchange offices only. There are an increasing number of ATMs that accept international bank cards. There are several money-exchange machines in Belgrade (including one at the airport), accepting Pounds Sterling, US Dollars and Euros, giving back Dinars. Scottish and Northern Irish Pound Sterling bank notes are not accepted.
Serbia duty free
The following items may be imported into Serbia without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 1L of wine and 1L of spirits.
• 250mL of eau de toilette and a reasonable quantity of perfume.
• Jewellery and clothing.
• Two photo cameras, one video camera.
• One pair of binoculars.
• One pocket electronic calculator.
• Camping equipment.
• One bicycle.
• One engine.
• Sporting requisites (enquire for further details).
• If portable, one musical instrument, one music player, one radio receiver, one laptop.
Restricted items
Weapons and ammunition are prohibited, unless they are for hunting purposes and the hunt is organised by the Hunters Association of Serbia. Animals may be imported as long as there is proof of the health condition of the animal. Cats and dogs must have a vet certificate.
