Après-ski

Après-ski in Jackson Hole takes place in various lively slopeside bars. The Mangy Moose (tel: (307) 733 4913; www.mangymoose.net) in Teton Village base has celebrated more than 45 years in business, and has been voted one of North America's best ski bars.

There's a wider choice of après-ski bars in central Jackson, including several genuine cowboy saloons and a wonderful 1950s-style diner, The Cadillac Grille (55 North Cache Street; tel: (307) 733 3279; www.cadillac-grille.com).

Eating out

There is a limited but adequate choice of restaurants in Jackson Hole at the base of the mountain, but a far wider selection in Jackson with options ranging from fast food to gourmet.

Teton Thai (7342 Granite Loop Road; tel: (307) 733 0022; www.tetonthai.com), near the base village, serves undisputedly some of the best Thai food in the region and is a hangout for both locals and visitors.

At the top of the Bridger gondola, the Couloir restaurant offers fine Western cuisine amid stunning scenery. The gondola is also open for evening diners to sample dishes such as bison and sticky-glazed pork.

Beyond the slopes

Outdoor activities in and around Jackson Hole range from the regular ski resort offerings of dog sledding, tubing, snowmobile tours and snowshoeing to ballooning, climbing and sightseeing plane trips. Additionally, wildlife safaris can introduce visitors to some of the 10,000 elk that live in the area.

The town of Jackson itself has galleries, cinemas, museums, a library, concerts, indoor tennis and swimming.

Family fun

Jackson Hole is a fun resort where families will enjoy being together.

The Wrangler Day Care centre (tel: (307) 739 2788), which accepts children aged from six months to three years, offers lessons in basic skiing techniques and indoor activities – reservations are required. There are tailored lessons for all ages from the resort's ski school, with special camps also operating during school holiday periods throughout the season for older children.

The slopeside Kids Ranch in Cody House offers a range of activities, including an outdoor snow play area with an easy-to-use magic carpet lift. Evening activities include the ‘Kids Night Out’, where children from the age of four to 18 can relax with a range of entertainment and games away from their parents, from pizza nights and films to floodlit sledging.

Retail therapy

There is a clutch of shops in Teton Village; most of which are ski or board stores. A new addition is Wool & Whiskey (7652 Granite Ridge Loop Road), which offers men’s clothing and a well-stocked whiskey bar.

With limited shopping in Jackson Hole ski resort, serious shoppers can head to Jackson where a mix of regional arts and crafts outlets and national chains await – there are dozens of quirky and interesting stores in the town.

Splashing out

Switch skis or board for a snowmobile and zoom across Yellowstone National Park, visit Old Faithful and then enjoy a swim in a natural thermal pool, with Jackson Hole Snowmobile Tours (tel: (307) 733 6850; www.jacksonholesnowmobile.com).

Teton Village is the most convenient place to stay for hitting the slopes and offers a wide choice of apartments, but Jackson has more atmosphere. There are a number of upmarket hotels in Jackson Hole, as well as luxury chalets with spas, bed and breakfasts, guest houses and a hostel for those on a budget.
