South Korea travel advice
2010 saw a number of provocative actions by the DPRK against South Korea, including the sinking of a naval vessel and an attack against Yeonpyeong Island, killing 4 people However, since early 2011, tensions have reduced and the British Foreign office assesses that there is no substantially increased risk or danger to those living in or travelling to South Korea as a result of these tensions. However, further acts of provocation cannot be ruled out in 2011 and travellers should continue to monitor news reports and the British Embassy website.
In late March to early April 2011some cases of H5N1 Avian Influenza were detected in the vicinity of Yeongcheon city, south eastern Gyeongsangbuk Province. If travelling to affected areas, British nationals should comply with the instructions of the local authorities including by observing any exclusion or disease control zones which may be in place.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK - North Korea) reported carrying out a nuclear test on 9 October 2006. There is no evidence of any danger to those living in the ROK (South Korea) as a result of this test. Further developments in the North Korea could potentially give rise to regional tension.
It is recommended that British nationals coming to the ROK for longer than two weeks should register with the consular Section of the British embassy.
It is not possible to enter North Korea from South Korea.
