Things to see and do in Lanzarote, Spain
Lanzarote's capital is the best place to discover the modern and metropolitan side of the island. Arrecife is a lively port city with plenty of history, a pretty waterfront and pleasant beach.
The vast majority of Lanzarote´s 93 beaches have beautiful golden or white sands. Papagayo Beach, at the southern tip, is renowned as one of the best and enjoys some of the finest weather.
Cesar Manrique created radical architectural designs which can be seen across Lanzarote. The Cesar Manrique Foundation is built around five volcanic vacuums in the surrounding lava flow. The fountains and volcanic bubble rooms and gardens make this unlike any house you have ever seen.
At El Diablo restaurant (tel: 928 840 057) meats are cooked on a geothermal barbeque, with the heat provided by the volcano underneath your feet. The panoramic views are a bonus.
The illuminated grottoes of Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua are rightly popular. These natural lava-formed caves have been styled by Cesar Manrique to provide a surreal subterranean experience.
The Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Gardens) has over 1,000 species of prickly plants to see. This is no ordinary cactus display though as the entire garden and area has been designed by Cesar Manrique.
A series of spectacular viewpoints around Lanzarote, the Mirador Tour takes you all over the island to the most beautiful, and some of the most unknown, places on the island. Special road signs with a camera symbol point out many of them.
The Museum of International and Contemporary Art exhibits many modernist paintings and sculptures that can be viewed at leisure before dining at one of the island's best restaurants. The museum and restaurant are located within an old historic fortress, the Castillo San Jose in Arrecife.
The Rancho Texas (www.ranchotexaslanzarote.com) is great for kids who want to be cowboys or girls. Activities include prospecting for gold, exploring the Indian Village and making new furry friends at the petting zoo. In the evening there's also a barbecue, bucking bronco and line dancing.
This is how the Earth looked in prehistoric times. Timanfaya Volcano Park is Lanzarote´s most popular tourist attraction with over 25 volcanoes in just 50 sq km (19 sq miles).
