Things to see and do in Tenerife

Beaches

There is a plethora of beautiful sandy beaches on the southern shores. Many have imported golden grains but a few still have the original black volcanic sand.

Masca

The hidden village of Masca clings to the edge of the Teno Mountains. Tenerife's very own Shangri-La is arguably the most spectacular and prettiest of the island's villages.

Mercedes Mountains

The pine-scented hills of the Mercedes Mountains are the perfect spot for some hill-walking.The pines and palms of Tenerife's northern tip provide welcome relief from the stark landscape of the south.

Mount Teide cable car

Vistors can glide to the top of the world's third largest volcano by cable car (www.telefericoteide.com). The views from the top of Mount Teide are astounding; on a clear day you can see several of the other islands.

Orotava Valley

Local wine can be enjoyed amidst the lush vineyards and plantations of the Orotava Valley. Several vineyards hold tasting sessions and tours on the island's verdant north coast.

Parasailing

A tandem parasail flight gives a great birds-eye view of the island (www.parapentetf.com). Tenerife has over 40 launch sites and many clubs that offer courses.

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is a town of two halves. The original resort town of Tenerife is a marriage of souvenir shops and cosmopolitan restaurants to the east, and flaking shutters, cobbled roads and narrow alleys to the west.

Santa Cruz Carnival

The annual Santa Cruz Carnival (www.carnavaltenerife.es) is considered second only to Rio de Janeiro by the locals. Tenerife's biggest fiesta sees hundreds of thousands of people take to the capital's streets in February.

Siam Park

Siam Park is one of Europe's biggest water parks (www.siampark.net). This Thai-inspired aquatic land has some of the highest, fastest and longest water rides in the world.

Teide National Park

The Teide National Park (http://reddeparquesnacionales.mm.es) is like a lunar landscape that visitors can get lost in. The twisted lava trails and surreal rock formations provide an eerie landscape like no other on earth.

Whale watching

There is a wealth of whales and dolphins that reside off Tenerife's shores. One of the world's largest pods permanently swim between the waters of Tenerife and La Gomera. Boat excursions can be booked from most of the resorts ports.
