Split history
Split was founded when Emperor Diocletian built his retirement home by the water’s edge in AD295. After his Salona upbringing he went on to rule the Roman Empire for two decades. Centuries of Venetian rule (1420-1797) have also influenced the city both with architectural flourishes, but culture too.
With the fall of Venice, Split passed to Austria-Hungary, an empire that in turn left its architectural and cultural stamp on Split. After WWII, when the city was part of Yugoslavia, urban expansion continued apace as the city developed as an important port and heavy industrial hub.
