Split Nightlife

Nightlife in Split is at its best in summer, with a range of outdoor cultural events and coastal bars and clubs staying open until the small hours. Within the palace, bars tend to close at around 0100 and the Riva cafés and bars tend to close even earlier. The free Visit Split guide has events listings and is available from the tourist office.

Split is very much an outdoor city, but it does have a limited cultural life. The highlight of the cultural calendar is the Split Summer Festival (mid-July to mid-August) featuring evening performances of music and drama at various open-air locations in the Old Town, with the best loved event being opera on Peristil. For information about cultural events, pick up a monthly leaflet from the tourist office on the Peristil.

Bars in Split

Ghetto Club

Raffish bar set on the little-known second tier of the palace. Still something of a local secret in Split, this is the retreat of local poets and left-of-centre trendies. The outdoor courtyard is the place to see and be seen; just don’t flash a guidebook or camera, and try to order in Croatian. The interior is as off-the-walls as many of the customers.

Puls 2

A trendy bar set within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace. Enjoy the odd live DJ set indoors or take a cushion and sit on the stone steps outside where once Roman legionnaires whiled away the evening. Big measures of spirits and ice-cold beer make this a great nightspot in Split.

Buvinova 1, Split

Vidilica Café

Hike up above the sweaty Mediterranean swagger of Split’s city centre and enjoy the cool breezes of Marjan Hill. Sit on the terrace with a cold beer or Croatian coffee and watch the ferries buzz in and out of the port and the crowds filing along the Riva. Perfect for a sundowner.

Clubs in Split

Hemingway

With a long array of cool cocktails and a swimming pool, this is one of the most popular clubs in Split. A young and appreciative local crowd lap up the house and techno that is served up by local DJs and some bigger names from Zagreb and even further afield. A good place to see and be seen.

Tropic Club Equador

A Latin vibe permeates this cool haunt down on Bačvice Bay. Dress to impress and dance and flirt the night away as the moon settles over the island of Brač in the distance. Bartenders at this cool Split club mix up some pretty mean cocktails too.

Live Music in Split

Klub Kocka

Fans of alternative rock and indie can make their way out of Split’s city centre to this offbeat venue that hides away in a basement. Local students, indie kids and goths do their thing to an ever-changing line-up of live bands and DJs. Hard spirits and cheap beer keep the dance floor busy.

O'Hara

A good summer option for live music. Rock and pop bands from around Croatia and elsewhere in the Balkans descend on this fun venue in Split, down by the water just east of Bačvice. Even when there is no band on this is still a great place to party with live DJs.

Music and Dance in Split

Hrvastsko Narodno Kazalište (Croatian National Theatre)

A lovely old dame of a building on the edge of Diocletian’s Palace in the heart of Split. The opera, drama, classical music and ballet performed here are very much geared towards the locals, though the quality of the performances, especially the talents who visit from other parts of Croatia, can transcend language barriers.
