Things to do in Split
Split boasts a number of decent beaches. The most popular is Bačvice, a sandy bay just a 10-minute stroll from Diocletian’s Palace. There is an informal café/bar as well as a fully fledged entertainment complex. There are a number of good swimming spots further south along the coast and also on the other side of Marjan Hill. The offshore islands have great beaches, including the famous stretch of Zlatni Rat at Bol on Brač. The Adriatic waters are renowned for their cleanliness making swimming in Croatia a real pleasure.
Croatia is emerging as one of Europe’s yachting hotspots and it is easy to see why as its clean waters boast over 1,000 islands and an increasing number of marinas. Split is a major yachting base and yachts can be hired out ‘bareback’ for those with someone in their party with the full skipper and radio qualifications or hire can be arranged with a skipper who can also suggest a route. Day trips run from Split, but week-long hire is more common.
Walking around Split in summer can be hard enough, but the surrounding mountains also present many good trails, though make sure to check about any areas where ordinance may have been left following the fighting in the 1990s. The islands also offer excellent walking with the hike to the highest point in all of the islands, Vidova Gora on Brač, very popular. The walk down to the Blaca Hermitage on the same island is also rewarding.
Diving is becoming increasingly popular on the Dalmatian coast. The best diving is outside of Split on and around the islands. Vis is the highlight with its famed Blue Grotto providing a thrilling experience when the sun and light are dancing mesmerisingly on the crystal-clear cave waters. Vis is also surrounded by a necklace of shipwrecks with some of them making for challenging scuba-diving, though they should only be attempted with one of the local operators.
The sea kayaking in and around the islands off the nearby island of Vis is first rate with warm waters and myriad little bays and coves to explore, not to mention deserted beaches to pull up on. Rafting and white water kayaking are also popular on the Cetina River south of Split, with operators running regular trips on the upper stretches of the Cetina River.
