Money & duty free for Sweden
Swedish Krona (SEK; symbol kr) = 100 öre. Notes are in denominations of kr1,000, 500, 100, 50 and 20. Coins are in denominations of kr10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50 öre.
American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are all widely accepted, although it should be noted that most shops and restaurants require ID when paying with a credit card. ATMs are widely available and can be used with most international bank cards, although it’s worth bearing in mind that you may incur a small charge. Personal cheques are no longer used, while traveller's cheques can be cashed at most banks.

Traveller’s cheques are widely accepted, although you can expect a nominal fee to be levied when paying with them. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, visitors are advised to take traveller's cheques in Euros, Pounds Sterling or US Dollars. However, if you’re planning to only be in Sweden, traveller’s cheques in Swedish krone are the cheapest option.
Banks are open Mon-Wed and Fri 0815-1530. On Thursdays, banking hours are slightly longer, running from 0815-1800. In larger cities such as Gothenburg, Malmo and Stockholm, some banks have longer opening hours and are open at weekends.
There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if travelling from or to a country outside the European Union.
Currency can be converted at FOREX foreign exchange agencies; these are found in major cities, airports and ferry terminals.
Sweden duty free
Sweden is within the European Union. If you are travelling from the UK, you are entitled to buy fragance, skincare, cosmetics, champagne, wine, selected spirits, fashion accessories, gifts and souvenirs - all at tax-free equivalent prices. There are no longer any allowance restrictions on these tax-free items.
If you are arriving from a non-EU country, the following goods may be imported into Sweden by persons over 17 years of age without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 1L spirits with more than 22% alcohol; or
• 2L fortified or sparkling wine
• 4L wine and 16L beer.
• A reasonable quantity of perfume.
• Gifts up to a value of kr4,000
Note: Travellers must be over 18 years of age to import any cigarettes or tobacco products, and over 20 years of age to import any alcoholic beverages. These regulations are strictly enforced.
Narcotics, firearms, ammunition, weapons, most meat and dairy products, eggs, plants, potatoes from outside the EU, endangered species, fireworks and alcoholic beverages of over 60% alcohol.
Narcotics, counterfeit items and explosives are all prohibited exports while currency in amounts of more than €10,000 or foreign equivalent needs to be declared. Artefacts and endangered animals and plants and products must also be declared.
