Syrian Arab Republic travel advice
The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria and urges British nationals in Syria to leave immediately, following violent demonstrations across the country, including the capital Damascus which have resulted in some deaths.
Travellers should not attempt to enter Iraq via the Syrian border, which is subject to restrictions on both sides.
Travellers should exercise discretion in behaviour and dress, especially when visiting religious sites. There have been some isolated incidents of acid attacks against Syrian women for not wearing Islamic dress near Damascus University and on Hamra street, a fashionable retail area in central Damascus.
