ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during World War I (1914â€-1918). The day is remembered as ANZAC Day and commemorates all the men and women who have fought not just in World War I, but in all wars fought in Australia's name. The town of Kanchanaburi marks ANZAC day in remembrance of all the allied prisoners - including many Australian and New Zealanders - that lost their lives in the forced labour camps that built the Burma-Thailand railway during World War II. There is a dawn parade and ceremony at the Allied War Cemetery in the town which is home to the famous Bridge of the River Kwai.
