Money & duty free for Tunisia

Currency information: 

Tunisian Dinar (TND) = 1,000 millimes. Notes are in denominations of TND30, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of TND5 and 1, and 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 millimes.

Credit cards: 

Credit cards (mainly MasterCard and Visa) are accepted in a few places in major resorts and towns. American Express and Diners Club are accepted in few places in tourist areas. There are ATMs in most towns and every tourist resort.

There are ATMs in most towns and every tourist resort. Almost all of these will accept Visa cards – many also accept Maestro (Switch).

Travellers cheques: 

Readily cashed in banks and the usual authorised establishments; the most convenient currencies are Euros or US Dollars.

Mon-Fri 0800-1600 (winter); Mon-Fri 0730-1300 (summer).

Currency restriction: 

The import and export of local currency is prohibited. The import of foreign currency is unlimited, but large amounts should be declared and the amount exported must not exceed that declared upon arrival.

Currency exchange: 

All banks change money. They may require your receipt for traveller's cheques and will want to see your passport. Post offices change cash only.

Tunisia duty free

The following goods may be imported into Tunisia by anyone, irrespective of age, without incurring customs duty:

• 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 400g of tobacco.
• 1L of spirits or 2L of alcoholic beverages.
• 250mL of perfume.
• Gifts up to a value of TND100.

Note: The export of antiques is subject to a permit from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Pets must have a health certificate from the Veterinary authorities, stating they are free from any diseases.

Banned imports: 

Firearms (unless for hunting), explosives, narcotics, walkie-talkies, obscene publications, any other items which may be regarded as dangerous to public security, health, morality and so on.
