From downtown Birmingham, take I-59/20 east to exit 129. From Atlanta, take I-20 west to I-20/59 west and then to exit 129. Turn left at the bottom of the exit, and follow Messer Airport Highway to the airport.
Public Transport
Shuttle: It is advised to make a reservation in advance. Try Airport Express (Atlanta Airport Shuttle) (tel: (205) 591 7770; www.theairportexpress.com), which runs between Atlanta and the airport (journey time: 3.5 hours; fare: US$59 each way), or Birmingham Door to Door (tel: (205) 591 5550; www.birminghamdoortodoor.com). Journey time to central Birmingham is around 15-20 minutes.
Taxis: Taxis are available during the day and evening on the ground level outside the baggage claim area. The airport is serviced by American Cab, Award Cab Company, Birmingham Cab Company, Hill Cab Company and Yellow Cab.
Terminal facilities
Two ATMs are located on the upper level between concourses B and C.
Free Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the terminal. Technical support (tel: (205) 599 0541) is available during office hours Monday-Friday 0800-1630.
A food court is located on the upper level in the area between concourses B and C, before the security checkpoint. Fast food outlets, restaurants, a deli and a snack bar are available.
There are shops selling gift items in concourses B and C. Duty-free is not available, as this is a domestic-only airport.
Lost and found services are available at the information desk (tel: (205) 599 0500). Baggage trolleys are available at a cost of $2. Skycap porters are stationed outside the upper level to assist departing passengers with their luggage. Skycap service is also available at baggage claim.
Medical assistance is available.
Airport facilities
The airport offers a self-service business centre on the upper level of the terminal building, between concourses B and C, and features include six laptop-ready work stations with wired high-speed Internet connections, an overnight FedEx package drop and coin-operated copy, stamp and fax machines. Conference and meeting facilities are available at the Holiday Inn (tel: (205) 591 6900; www.holidayinn.com).
The airport is fully accessible for disabled travellers, with lifts, ramps and adapted toilets. Wheelchairs can be supplied if required. Passengers are advised to inform their airline of any special needs in advance. The parking facilities have designated spaces for disabled travellers.
There are 5,600 spaces available for short- and long-term parking in the parking deck. Short-term parking is located on Level 3, and long-term parking is located on levels 2 and 4 to 7. Level 3 is connected by crosswalks to concourses B and C. The remote parking lot (surface parking) has 900 spaces and is serviced by a complimentary shuttle. The cell phone lot accommodates 40 cars. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National counters are located on the ground level of the terminal near the baggage claim area and concourse B. All rental cars may be picked-up or dropped-off in the parking deck on the ground level.
