The day of Our Lady of Victories is recognised on 8 September and is a public holiday. Malta celebrates victory, and the ending of its two great sieges of 1565 (Napoleon) and 1943 (Hitler) with two days of celebrations. The culmination is the traditional Victory Regatta at the Grand Harbour of Valletta on the second afternoon - a highly competitive and colourful event. There are also church services, speeches, military bands and laying of wreaths in various parts of the island. Although most of the celebrations centre on Valletta, activities are also held in Senglea, Naxxar, Mellieha and Xaghra on Gozo.

Two days of aircraft exhibitions, displays and fly-past attractions draw big crowds to Malta's International airport in September. A wide range of aircraft from different eras are on display including contingents that recall Malta's vital role in World War II. The Red Arrows display team are regular visitors from the UK, and are supported by a number of RAF planes such as Harrier, Jaguar and Hawk. There is also a 'Merlins over Malta' feature event with the much loved Spitfire. Both military and civil aircraft appear in the show and there are representatives from many different countries.
