Things to do in Verona

Cycling

A favourite weekend activity in Verona is cycling along the river Adige. In addition, one of the benefits of the traffic restrictions in the historic centre makes it easy to glide around the city’s Unesco-rated monuments. Other great cycling itineraries include excursions into the wine regions of Soave and Valpolicella. Typical bike hire is €3 per hour and €10 per day.

Boat trips

A playground for people of all ages, nearby Lake Garda encompasses an immense 370 sq km (142 sq miles). To the north the Brenta Dolomites rise, while to the south of the landscape features gentle hills and a Mediterranean micro-climate. Boat trips on the lake are offered at all the lakeside towns, in particular Desenzano del Garda, quaint Sirmione and Gardone Riviera. Navigazione sul Lago di Garda also operates numerous passenger ferries across the lake. A one-way ticket across the lake is €12.

Golf

Golf is an exclusive game in Italy, usually requiring club membership. However, most clubs will receive non-members if you show a membership card from your home club and proof of handicap. Fees are typically based on a day’s play. Golf Club Verona has an attractive, undulating and tree-lined course. There are also plenty of scenic courses around Lake Garda.

Hiking

Aside from enjoying the pedestrianised historic centre of Verona, and its wealth of Unesco-heritage monuments, the city is surrounded by a wealth of walking opportunities. Enjoying a sub-tropical micro-climate the shores of Lake Garda offer numerous and varied itineraries from the botanical gardens of Il Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera to the vineyards of the Valtenesi. Other good walks include the tumble-down ruins of the Grotte di Catullo which cover 2 hectares of Sirmione’s northern tip, and for something more demanding head for Riva del Garda, which is surrounded by towering mountains and sheer waterfalls.

Windsurfing

It doesn’t take long to discover that windsurfing is one of the most popular activities on Lake Garda. The lake is blessed with crystal clear water and highly reliable wind conditions. Most towns around the lake hire out windsurfing gear, and offer courses for all ages and abilities. One thing to note at the northern end of the lake is that water and jet skiing are not permitted, and there are fewer ferries plying the waters. Highlight spots are at Torbole, Riva del Garda and Garda town, where you’ll also find the lake’s best beaches.
