Restaurants in Zagreb
The Zagreb restaurant scene very much focuses on Croatian food, with variations between the more central-European slant of Slavonia (think sausages, pickled cabbage and potato dumplings) and the Mediterranean offerings of Dalmatia and Istria (fish, seafood and risottos). There is a budding move towards haute-cuisine, though it’s always in the higher price brackets.
The Zagreb restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over 200HRK)
Moderate (100HRK to 200HRK)
Cheap (up to 100HRK)
Prices are for a three-course meal with half a bottle of house wine, tax and service included.
Agava
A wonderful and smart restaurant on Tkalčićeva Street – Zagreb’s pedestrianised promenade – the food is sophisticated, along with the clientele. Choose from swordfish carpaccio, steak drizzled with truffle oil, or go for the cheaper choices of fantastic risottos and pastas. There’s also a good wine list that offers the perfect opportunity to try quality Croatian wines.
Stari Fijaker 900
Try cuisine from the Croatian region of Slavonia in this old-fashioned restaurant in Zagreb that still breathes its high reputation. The ‘in’ place for the city’s elite in the past decades, the food is excellent – choose from the homemade sausages and try the štrukli (cheese-filled dumplings), Slavonia’s most typical offering.
Tip Top
A fantastic place in Zagreb for a whiff of Dalmatian cuisine and old-style Croatia – the food is sumptuous, with a daily changing set menu where you can taste their famous octopus brodet (stew with red wine, garlic and herbs) and grilled fish and seafood. The waiting staff haven’t been ‘updated’ since the 1980s, together with the loyal regulars. It’s a real Zagreb oldie, with great food at low prices.
Boban
If you want to dine with the locals, head to Boban. This Italian restaurant in Zagreb serves up daily specials alongside the usual suspects in an old brick cellar. The only downside is the lack of outside tables in summer.
Dubravkin Put
Seafood is the speciality at this highly acclaimed restaurant in Zagreb, with fresh fish arriving daily from the coast. The owner is from Dubrovnik, so it’s Dalmatian food all the way, and the crowds that vie for tables vouch for its quality. The restaurant is in a leafy area northwest of the town centre, and there’s a wonderful terrace for outdoor spring and summer dining.
Rubelj Grill
Part of a famous chain that has eateries across Zagreb, Rubelj Grill is good for a quick bite of Bosnian-style ćevapi (grilled spicy meat) whilst browsing Dolac Market. Here, you can check out some local characters who come for the quick and delicious food.
Paviljon
A sound choice, with carefully prepared meat and fish dishes served in an elegant 19th-century Art Pavilion, close to Zagreb’s train station. The cuisine is Central European, with the same atmosphere of smart diners who take their food seriously, though without straying from the traditional.
Pivnica Medvedgrad
This popular beer hall is known for its hearty dishes like sausages and beans and its own-brand brews served at heavy wooden tables. It’s a great restaurant in Zagreb to chat to locals and soak up the buzz of night-time Zagreb.
Zinfandel’s Restaurant
Set inside the dining room of the renowned Regent Esplanade Zagreb, this is the city’s most creative restaurant that focuses on local and international dishes. The presentation, along with the restaurant’s interior, is smart, minimal and polished, and the taste is impeccable.
