Hotels in Zurich
There is a wide range of hotels in Zurich to choose from, ranging from cheap hotels to upmarket properties offering world-class standards.
The Zurich hotels below have been grouped into three different pricing categories.
Luxury (over SFr400)
Moderate (SFr200 to SFr400)
Cheap (up to SFr200)
These Zurich hotel prices are the starting prices for a standard double room per night and include taxes and breakfast unless specified.
Bar Hôtel Seehof
Located close to both the opera and the lake, this hotel in Zurich occupies a 1930s townhouse but offers a modernised interior. It's good value for money, although in some cases the bathrooms are rather small. Artwork and photographs by local artists decorate the walls and a bar with an excellent selection of wines adds to the atmosphere.
Baur au Lac
Arguably one of Zurich's best hotels, Baur au Lac is situated in its own private park on the shores of Lake Zurich, at the head of the fashionable Bahnhofstrasse. The same family has owned the hotel since 1844. All 125 rooms and suites are different, while a rooftop gym offers great views of the lake and the Alps. During summer, meals (including breakfast) are served al fresco in the garden or in the glass pavilion beside the canal.
Central Plaza Hotel
Built in 1883 with an impressive period facade, the Central Plaza has 105 air-conditioned rooms and suites, all fully soundproofed against traffic noise; many have views of the River Limmat and all have modem points. Highlights include a piano bar-cafe and the King's Cave restaurant. A terrace garden with illuminated waterfalls is open in summer. It's also said that the piano bar of this Zurich hotel was a favourite meeting place for Cold War spies.
Hotel Eden au Lac
Occupying a prime spot on the shores of Lake Zurich, the Hotel Eden au Lac has enjoyed a prestigious reputation for more than a century. Constructed in art nouveau style in 1909, this Zurich hotel retains an old world charm while offering modern amenities and conveniences. Its French restaurant is famous for its hors d'oeuvres - the Aga Khan III (1877-1957) developed one of the earliest dégustation menus here during his wartime stay.
Hotel Rothaus
The Rothaus is located in the lively Langstrasse district of town and aims for a straightforward take on style - design and decor is considered and individual without being overly showy. All rooms are en suite with flat-screen TVs, and the hotel hires bikes out for a small daily fee. The bar hosts occasional music events, giving good opportunity to toss back a plum brandy or two. Room rate does not include breakfast.
Hotel St Josef
A cheap Zurich hotel option for those who still enjoy being relatively close to the central points of interest (the lake being just a short walk away and the station even closer), the Hotel St Josef is a homely little hotel with bright, spacious rooms and a hands-on attitude to guest satisfaction. Its Time Out Restaurant (nothing to do with the publication) is a further draw, with a summer terrace in use when weather allows.
Lady's First
Conceived in 1994 when eight women decided to create a female-exclusive hotel in what was formerly a finishing school for country girls, Lady's First is a boutique design hotel housed in an elegant 19th-century building. This Zurich hotel is no longer, however, exclusively for women - men are welcome too. A good-natured atmosphere characterises this establishment, which also offers its guests free Wi-Fi, a wellness centre and a roof terrace. There are 28 rooms.
Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport
The Radisson Blu Hotel has drawn regular plaudits since opening in 2008. Its most obvious selling point is an airport location - it sits just across from arrivals and departures - although it's worth knowing that the city centre's only a 10-minute drive away. In terms of amenities, there's a fitness club, an Italian restaurant and free high-speed internet. Decor is sleek and modern.
Widder Hotel
Composed of eight adjoining medieval houses, the Widder Hotel is named after a 13th-century Augustinian monastery that used to exist here. The 42 individually decorated rooms and seven suites (four with private roof terraces) all combine the old and new, with features including 17th-century frescoes and old wooden floors. The Widder Bar has long been an important jazz venue - its 'Library of Spirits' offers several hundred single-malt whiskies.
