Currency information

US Dollars are accepted everywhere but at the moment the official currency is the Netherlands Antilles Guilder or Florin (ANG; symbol ƒ) which is going to be phased out and replaced by the Caribbean Guilder (CMg). Notes are in denominations of 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents, 1 guilder, and 5 guilder coins. The Caribbean guilder is pegged to the US Dollar (US$ 1 = CMg 1.79).

Credit cards

Major credit cards are widely accepted. Debit cards are accepted in large shops and supermarkets. There are some ATMs.

Travellers cheques

Widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, traveller's cheques in US Dollars are advised.

Currency restrictions

The import and export of local and foreign currency is unrestricted. Amounts over ANG20,000 or equivalent must be declared.

Available in banks and bureaux de change.

Curaçao duty free

Overview

The following items may be imported into Curaçao by persons of 17 years of age or older without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 50 cigarillos or 125g of tobacco.
• 1 l of distilled beverages or 2 l wine.

• 50 ml perfume, 250 ml Eau de toilette.

• 500 g coffee, 100 g coffee extract.

• 100 g tea, 40 g tea extract.
• personal belongings up to the value of ANG200.

Banned Imports

Narcotics. (Note that unlike in the Netherlands, possessing even a small amount of marijuana is considered a serious offence.)
