Travel by road

Summary:

Do not attempt to drive into the city centre unless it is absolutely essential. Signposting is poor, the road layout is disorienting, and car parking spaces are very hard to find, except for the two large shopping centre car parks where the daily charges are among the most expensive in Britain. Much of the historic centre is also prohibited to private cars. Instead use one of the Park & Ride sites that are well signposted as you approach the city. Parking is free though each adult is charged to use the bus.

Emergency breakdown service:

AA (tel: 0800 887 766 or 0845 788 7766) or RAC (tel: 0800 828 282).

Routes:

Cambridge is easy to reach from the north and south of the country. The M11 motorway, which sweeps to the west of the city, enables easy access from the south. From the north, the A1 and M1 motorways link to the A14 dual carriageway straight to the city, and the A14 is the route to take from the east and west.

Driving times:

From London – 1 hour 25 minutes; Ipswich – 1 hour.

Coaches:

National Express (tel: 0871 781 8181; www.nationalexpress.com) operates regular coach services connecting Cambridge with various destinations in the UK, including Victoria Coach Station in London. The bus station is located in the centre of the city on Drummer Street.
