Davos is one of the longest established ski resorts in the world, and today the skiing is rated among Europe's best.
But Davos has a life far beyond winter sports. If you arrive at the end of January, you may find world leaders and their entourage are in town, attending the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. Many other visitors are attracted to the town's extensive health and spa facilities with numerous private clinics.
It was as a health resort that Davos first achieved international prominence, attracting up to 2,000 cure seekers per night in the 19th century. However, skiing gradually became the bigger draw, aided by writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's description in 1894 of his skiing adventures in the area.
Davos is tucked away in Graubünden, the least accessible and perhaps the most parochial of the Swiss cantons. It's a region where Alpine peaks and valleys dominate. The Wolfgang Pass and Prättigau Valley connect Davos to Landquart, the main junction for routes north (to Zurich) and west.
