From kooky and psychedelic to laid-back and intimate, World Travel Guide rounds up ten of the best places in Amsterdam to smoke a legal joint

Get smart before you get high.

The first place to start your coffeeshop journey in Amsterdam is the Coffeeshop Information Centre and CBD store (Prins Hendrikkade 10), a short walk from Amsterdam Central Station. In here you will find all information about coffeeshops in Amsterdam, along with cannabis and CBD products. Alternatively, our post on “The Complete Guide to smoking marijuana in Amsterdam coffeeshops” is packed with useful info, including 12 great tips for first-time marijuana users and practical advice for connoisseurs.

However, if you already know all about weed, hash, THC and CBD and can’t wait to dive straight into the coffeeshop culture in Amsterdam, then this post will come in handy as we share the 10 best coffeeshops in Amsterdam.

1. Coffeeshopamsterdam

Formerly known as Dampkring and still under the same owner, this three-storey bright and airy venue on Haarlemmerstraat 44 (just a short distance away from Amsterdam Centraal Station) has enough room to sit and chill. Its exposed brick walls and neutral colour schemes conjure a laid-back living room vibe. Music is excellent and the weed is top-drawer too.

Coffeeshopamsterdam also has a café/pub around the corner from its coffeeshop, so you can smoke and have an alcoholic drink here (good deals abound during happy hours). They also screen major football games on a giant TV from time to time. The address of the café/pub is Singel 8.

2. Boerejongens

With contemporary design and budtenders in white coats, Boerejongens has lifted the image of coffeeshops to another level. The selection of weed, hash and edible is truly heroic – connoisseurs from near and far seek out this place for its top-quality award-winning strains that are unique to the brand Amsterdam Genetics. Boerejongens has four branches: Center (Utrechtsestraat 21), Sloterdijk Flagship Store (Humberweg 2), West (Baarsjesweg 239) and BIJ (Bonairestraat 78), though only the Center branch has a smoking room.

3. Tweede Kamer

The first coffeeshop in Amsterdam to start weighing and packaging products in front of customers back in the 80s, Tweede Kamer still carries the same spirit of openness and transparency into the 21st century. The staff won’t sell you anything that they wouldn’t smoke themselves. Getting a seat here is rarely easy, but do persevere: once you’re in, you won’t want to leave. If munchies hit, walk next door and grab some of the best cookies in Amsterdam.

4. Green House Centrum

A garter’s toss from the red light district, this popular spot serves up an excellent selection of skunk, drinks and snacks in a jolly ambiance. It has a ‘wall of celebrities’ where famous patrons peer down from the picture frames. Due to its popularity, getting a chair can be a tad tricky.

5. Barney’s Coffeeshop

One of the hippest coffeeshops in Amsterdam, this place has a warm but sophisticated vibe. There are four establishments to choose from: Barney’s Coffeeshop (Haarlemmerstraat 102), Barney’s Uptown (Haarlemmerstraat 105, just opposite the aforementioned coffeeshop), Barney’s Farm (Haarlemmerstraat 98) and Barney’s Lounge (Reguliersgracht 27).

6. Grey Area

Keep your eyes open and your camera ready while you puff, as this cosy coffeeshop has welcomed celebrity smokers such as Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and Woody Harrelson. Getting a seat can be an issue here – this place is small and oversubscribed – but the friendly atmosphere, helpful staff and first-rate weed make it worth persevering with.

7. Happy Feelings

Living up to its name, this sleek and contemporary coffeeshop does indeed send punters away feeling warm and fuzzy inside. If you’re feeling particularly partial to the heady effects of weed, fire up one of the colour-changing bongs and let your mind wander.

Though off the tourist trail, Ibiza’s extensive marijuana menu pulls in smokers from far and wide. Located in the uber-hip De Pijp district, this coffeeshop is a place where punters can kick back on comfortable couches, commandeer a private booth or munch some space cake and chat to the resident cat.
