The Festival of World Sacred Music

The most prominent annual festival in Morocco, the Festival of World Sacred Music attracts visitors and performers from all over the world to share spiritual music from their cultures. Sacred music doesn't mean that the music performed is necessarily religious; rather that the music will lift viewers' spirits as musicians display a variety of styles: from European classical to Sufi music, African classical guitar to Japanese drumming and American gospel.

Cherry Festival

This festival with sports, music and folklore events celebrates the cherry harvest, culminating in the coronation of the Cherry Queen, in the pretty Berber town of Sefrou, 30km (18.5 miles) southeast of Fès nestled on the slopes of the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Moulay Idriss Moussem

The town of Moulay Idriss close to Fes in the north of the country is the holiest site in the whole of Morocco. Each September it hosts the Moulay Idriss Moussem, a Muslim religious festival which honours the town's patron saint, Moulay Idriss, after which the town takes its name. It is deeply religious occasion during which thousands of Muslim pilgrims travel to the town to participate in this incredible religious gathering. The event is so important, it is considered by many to be an alternative to the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. This is a religious event and visitors should be sensitive to this fact as non-Muslims were forbidden from even visiting the town until the early part of the 20th century.

Tissa Horse Festival

The Tissa Horse Festival is a colourful spectacle where locals dressed in elaborate, traditional clothing can show off their horsemanship skills. The sheer energy, speed, power and beauty of the horses they ride—often Arab or Berber bred—is something to behold. The event takes place in Tissa, around 50km (31 miles) from Fes.

Sufi Culture Festival

The Sufi Culture Festival celebrates the heritage of Sufism, a strand of the Muslim faith, with lectures, meetings, art exhibitions and music concerts.
