A new extension to the Sofia metro network, which is currently under construction, is anticipated to connect the airport to the city from 2014.

Transfer between terminals

A free shuttle service takes travellers between the two passenger terminals, which are about 3km apart, every 30 minutes from 0700-1900. Taxis are another option.

Driving directions

Starting from Orlov Most (the bridge at the centre of the city), drive eastwards towards Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard and follow signs first to Hristofor Columb Boulevard and then to the airport.

Public Transport

Public transport road

Bus: Sofia Public Transport Company (SKGT) (tel: 0700 13233; www.sofiatraffic.bg) operates two buses serving Sofia Airport. Both run between the airport’s two terminals and the university in the city centre, albeit following different routes (journey time: 30 minutes; fare: лв1). The buses operate from 0500 to 2300, with regular services during the day. Tickets, which should be validated using machines on the bus, are available from the newsagents in both terminals.

Shuttle: Several of the bigger hotels provide shuttle buses to or from the airport.

Taxi: The best way to ensure a reliable taxi service to the city centre is to book in advance. OK Supertrans (tel: (02) 973 2121; oktaxi.net) has a desk in the arrivals hall. The metered fare to central Sofia is around лв10 - it is advisable to check that the meter is running.

Money

There are banks, ATMs and bureaux de change in both terminals.

Communication

A post office is located in Departures. Sofia Airport also offers free wireless internet access.

Food

There are cafés serving a range of drinks, light meals and snacks both before and after the security area in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 has greater options, including a restaurant offering a variety of international dishes, sandwiches, salads, soft drinks, beer and wine in the departures area.

Shopping

There are several shops at Sofia Airport, including a duty-free shop (for travellers leaving the EU) in Terminal 2 selling alcohol, tobacco, toiletries, cosmetics, accessories and much more. Additionally, there is a shop selling Bulgarian wines and other alcoholic beverages, as well as a number of souvenir and gift shops.

Luggage

Lost and found offices are located in both terminals (tel: (02) 937 2491). Luggage wrapping facilities are available in the departures area.

Other

There are baby changing rooms in the public areas and in the transit halls. Children's play areas are located on the first floor of Terminal 2 and in the transit hall. Sofia Airport also has a first aid centre with an on-call doctor. There are visitors' terraces at both terminals.

Airport facilities

Conference and business

A VIP lounge (tel: (02) 937 2192) with a capacity of 120 seats is located in the transit area of the departures hall in Terminal 1 – reservations should be made in advance. Copying and fax services, internet access and newspapers and magazines are available in the lounge. To gain access, travellers require a special invitation card issued by their airline at the check-in desk.

There are an additional two business lounges in Terminal 2, which house computer, fax and photocopying facilities.

Disabled facilities

Terminal 1 has sloped entry to the car park for wheelchair users and there are designated parking spaces reserved for disabled people. There are separate toilets for the disabled and a lift to the business class lounge in the terminal.

Terminal 2 was designed with special attention to disabled passengers. Access between the various levels of the multi-storey car park is facilitated by lifts and escalators and there are toilets for wheelchair users. Sofia Airport also has facilities to aid the boarding or disembarkation of disabled travellers: these should be requested in advance.

Car parking

A large car park with a capacity of 400 spaces is located in front of Terminal 1. A multi-storey parking area provides 800 parking spaces – this is linked to the departures area of Terminal 2. These two car parks, which offer short- and long-term parking options, are open 24 hours a day. Further parking information is available from the airport parking authorities (tel: (02) 937 3589).

Car rental

Car hire companies at Sofia Airport include Budget, Choice, Europcar, Sixt and Thrifty, plus local operators. Desks for these operators are located in both terminals.

Hotels

There are currently no hotels at Sofia Airport; the largest concentration of accommodation options is in the city centre, but there are a couple of options fairly close by.


Triada Hotel

The 62-room Triada offer two conference rooms and a business centre as well as restaurant and bar. Airport transfers are available, as is free internet access and a fully equipped fitness centre.

Hotel Consul

A three star hotel, the small Hotel Consul is about 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. It offers a restaurant, business centre and free internet access, and is close to a bus stop.
