Manchester Airport is one of England’s busiest airports and is the country’s largest outside the southeast region. Our Manchester Airport guide includes information on how to get to the airport, terminal facilities and where to stay.
A new £20 million control tower was opened in mid-2013. Construction of the Airport City project is under way, which will include the addition of business, retail and leisure facilities and new hotels upon completion in 2016. Major terminal improvements and the construction of a new tram connection are at the planning stage.
There are information desks in all terminals. Several members of staff are trained in British Sign Language.
The Skylink moving walkway system links Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via the airport railway station.
From central Manchester, take the southbound A5103 (Princess Road) and merge onto the southbound M56 motorway. Manchester Airport is located off junction 5 of the M56 motorway. Directions for all terminals are clearly signposted.
Rail: Manchester Airport's rail, coach and bus interchange, known as The Station, is connected to all three terminals via the Skylink moving walkway system. Trains operate to Manchester Airport from many stations in northern England and the Midlands. There is a frequent service between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly Station in the city centre (journey time: 20 minutes; fare: £4), which has connections to most major destinations. For information on times and fares, contact the 24-hour National Rail Enquiries line (tel: 0845 748 4950; www.nationalrail.co.uk).
Bus: The 24-hour Skyline bus 43 operates to the city centre (journey time: 60 minutes; fare: £2.90). Coach: A number of National Express (tel: 0870 580 8080; www.nationalexpress.com) services run from The Station to long-distance destinations throughout the United Kingdom. A dedicated ticket desk at The Station can provide full details of all routes and rates.
Taxi: Metered taxis are available either directly outside or near the arrivals hall of each terminal. A list of maximum fares for journeys outside Manchester is displayed near the taxi ranks. Alternatively, the airport’s official taxi partner, Arrow Cars (tel: 0161 489 8899), serves the airport, with booking desks in each terminal. The journey time into central Manchester is 25 to 45 minutes, and fares start at around £20 for city centre destinations.
ATMs, full service banking facilities and bureaux de change are available in each terminal. Currency can be pre-ordered from Travelex through the airport’s website and collected on arrival at the airport.
Free Wi-Fi internet access (up to 60 minutes) is provided in the terminal buildings; internet booths are available for those without wireless-enabled devices. Public telephones are positioned throughout Manchester Airport. A post office is located on-site.
All terminals have a good choice of restaurants, cafés and bars; some of which are open 24 hours a day. The majority of places to eat and drink are in the departures areas, but there are some options in the arrivals and check-in halls. The new Food Quarter food court in the departures area of Terminal 1 features a range of pop-up street-food-style eateries.
Duty-free shops (for non-EU passengers) and a variety of gift shops, newsagents and fashion boutiques are available in all terminals. For those not wishing to take their purchases with them on the flight, a 'collect on return' service is available.
