Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main airport for the Netherlands and is one of Europe’s main air transport hubs. Our guide to the airport includes contact details and information on airport facilities, as well as public transportation and accommodation options.
There are various construction projects happening at Schiphol Airport over the coming years. Work to improve and enlarge the security area has already begun in Departures 1, which involves relocating a number of shops in Lounge 1.
A Hilton Hotel is also under construction and is scheduled to open in 2015. In the same year work will begin to extend the terminal - this should be completed in 2016.
Information desks are located before passport control in Schiphol Plaza, in arrival halls 2 and 3 and behind passport control in departure lounges 2 and 3. Transfer desks in the concourses offer information on transfers and connecting flights. Touch screen kiosks provide general airport information and are located throughout the terminal.
There is just one terminal complex, which is split into three departure areas.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is situated off the A4 motorway, which links Amsterdam to The Hague. From Amsterdam, take the A10 ring road and merge onto the A4 in the direction of The Hague. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted from this route.
Rail: There is a railway station in the terminal's central hall, under Schiphol Plaza; direct trains run to Amsterdam Centraal Station (journey time: 15 minutes; fare: €4).
Night trains serve Utrecht, Amsterdam Centraal Station, Leiden, The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam, while the reservation-only, high-speed Thalys train serves major European cities. Other international services run to Berlin, Hannover and Leipzig.
Ticket machines and desks are located in Schiphol Plaza. Further rail information is available from Nederlandse Spoorwegen (tel: +31 30 751 51 55; www.ns.nl/en).
Bus: Public buses (tel: +31 900 266 63 99) run regularly to Amsterdam and other cities. Buses 197 and 370 (interliner express service) run to Amsterdam city centre and Amsterdam Zuid. Buses depart from platform A7 in front of arrival hall 2. Full details of routes can be found on the airport website.
Shuttles: Many hotels offer a free airport shuttle service to guests. The Connexxion Schiphol Hotel Service (tel: +31 88 339 4741; www.airporthotelshuttle.nl) is a daily hotel shuttle service running from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to more than 55 hotels in and around Amsterdam; purchase tickets at the Connexxion desk in arrival hall 2.
Taxi: Schiphol Travel Taxis are available from outside Schiphol Plaza. The journey to central Amsterdam is approximately 15 minutes. Taxis can be booked in advance on the airport's website.
There are numerous banks, ATMs, currency exchange machines and bureaux de change kiosks at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
There is a post office in departure lounge 2. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal building and there are dedicated internet workspace areas at KPN Internet Centres in departure lounges 1 and 2. Mobile telephone hire is available at the Telecom Rentcenter in Schiphol Plaza. Specialist multimedia telephone units, which can be used for telephoning, internet access and SMS services, are situated throughout the airport.
Schiphol Airport prides itself on its culinary offerings and boasts a broad range of bars, cafés, restaurants and brasseries, which serve anything from seafood and grilled meat to Dutch pancakes and fast-food. These eateries are situated throughout the terminal, both landside and airside.
There is a large choice of shops at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, including a duty-free outlet and a 24-hour supermarket at Schiphol Plaza pre-security and various clothing shops, newsagents and gift retailers post-security. A duty-free pre-order and collection service is available online.
Luggage lockers are situated throughout the terminal and passengers can store bags there for up to 168 hours. There is also a baggage depot (tel: +31 20 795 2843) which will store bags for up to one month. Open between 0600 and 2200 daily, it can be found in the basement between arrival halls 1 and 2. Lost items can be reported at the information desks in the departure and arrivals areas or to the dedicated lost and found line (tel: +31 20 794 0800). Passengers can also fill out lost and found forms on the airport website. If luggage is found, passengers can opt to have their items shipped back to them via post.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has a medical centre, 24-hour emergency medical services and a pharmacy. There is a fully equipped baby room and several play areas on Holland Boulevard and baby-change facilities are provided in the toilets. Showers can be found at the on-site Hotel Mercure Schiphol Terminal Hotel (tel: +31 20 604 1339; www.hotelopschiphol.nl). A massage parlour, hairdresser, casino and prayer room are also located in the terminal.
There are dedicated smoking cabins scattered throughout the terminal. Bars such as Galaxy, Murphey's and Cafe Amsterdam also have smoking areas.
There is a large range of dedicated business facilities at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
The Schiphol Airport Meeting Centre (tel: +31 20 654 1600) has office space equipped with fax, PC and telephone facilities, as well as a secretarial service and a conference room. The Schiphol Airport Avioport business centre (tel: +31 20 654 1800), which is a ten minute walk from the terminal, is a new building with well-equipped offices and leisure facilities including a golf course. In addition, the Exchange Avenue conference centre (tel: +31 20 603 4607) offers six meeting rooms with capacity for up to 80 delegates.
Major airlines have executive lounges, which offer basic business facilities, while the ACompany’s Airport Business Point (tel: +31 20 406 9810) in arrival hall 2 is a dedicated lounge for those waiting for drivers or colleagues.
Facilities for the disabled include automatic doors, toilets and lifts between all floors of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Wheelchairs are available for visitors – passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
Disabled assistance at the airport is outsourced to Axxicom Airport Caddy (tel: +31 20 406 98 07) who provide assistance in the form of wheelchairs, electric caddy cars and lifting chairs.
Disabled parking is available in car parks P1, P2 and P3; with a shuttle bus linking the latter to the terminal. If you require assistance travelling from the car parks to the terminal, please email Axxicom Airport Caddy at least 48 hours in advance. Two short-term car parks (P1 and P2) are connected to the terminal and Schiphol Plaza by covered walkways. Long-term parking is available in an open-air car park (P3), which is situated 4km (2.5 miles) from the terminal; a free 24-hour shuttle bus links this car park to the terminal. A VIP valet service is also available (reservations are required: tel: +31 20 406 7890).
Car hire companies at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol include: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and National. Desks for these operators are located in Schiphol Plaza.
There are a number of hotels at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which are either connected via covered walkways or by shuttle services. A new Hilton Hotel is currently under construction at the airport and is scheduled to open in 2015. Hotels can be booked online via the airport website or at the reservations desk in the baggage claim area.
