Currency information

Tajik Somoni (TJS) = 100 diram. Notes are in denominations of TJS100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are in denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 diram.

Credit cards

Credit card acceptance in Tajikistan is limited. International credit and debit cards are generally accepted only in higher-end hotels, some supermarkets, and a small number of restaurants in Dushanbe. Outside the capital, card payments are rarely possible, and visitors should not rely on cards for everyday expenses.

ATM

ATMs are available in major cities, particularly in Dushanbe and Khujand, but coverage is limited elsewhere. Even where ATMs exist, they may not always accept foreign cards or may run out of cash, so visitors should not depend on them as a primary source of money.

Currency restrictions

Foreign currency: Travellers bringing in over USD 10,000 (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare it at customs. On departure, travellers may take up to USD 3,000 (or equivalent) out of the country without declaration.

Local currency: The Tajik somoni cannot be freely exchanged outside the country, and visitors should retain exchange receipts in case they are asked to show proof when converting somoni back into foreign currency.

Tajikistan duty free

Overview

The following goods may be imported into Tajikistan by persons 18 years of age or older without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 500g of tobacco.
• 2L of spirits.
• Perfume for personal use.
