Art Hits the Spot

As part of events to commemorate the crowning of Marseille as European Capital of Culture in 2013, Aix-en-Provence is offering a contemporary art trail through the city. Curator Xavier Douroux has commissioned renowned artists to take over public spaces around the city. Landmarks such as the Hôtel de Ville courtyard, the Rotonde fountain, the Cours Mirabeau, the Grand Théâtre de Provence, the Pavillon Vendôme and the Palais de Justice are just some of the historical buildings that have been transformed.

Cirque en Capitales

A month of festivities, featuring 50 shows and 200 performances as the circus comes to Aix.

Tour de France

More than 50 years has passed since France's legendary cycling race passed through Aix. But in 2013, the stage six leg will start from Aix and finish in Montpellier. A great time for cycling and sports fan to coincide their visit to the city.

Festival d'Aix-en-Provence

International opera festival which takes place in a number of spectacular venues, including the courtyard of the Théâtre de l'Archevêché, with its huge spiral staircases, its medieval arches and its 17th century wings. Other venues include: the Grand Théâtre de Provence. Hôtel Maynier-d'Oppède and the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume.

Aix-en-Provence Festival

The Aix-en-Provence Festival is traditionally associated with Mozart and puts on a programme of classical music inspired by the legendary composer's extraordinary talent and creativity. As well as performances of some of Mozart's best-loved work, the three-week event also includes pieces by some of the world's other great classical composers including Rossini, Offenbach and Wagner. The first festival was held in 1948 and included only a handful of concerts. It has grown every year since and has become one of the region's most successful classical music events. Held in this beautiful city in the south of France, the festival features plenty of other attractions, including numerous food and drink stalls.

Musique dans la Rue (Music in the street)

This takes place each year in June to coincide with the national Fête de la Musique. It offers a varied 16-day programme of classical, jazz and popular concerts held in different street venues and courtyards in the city. Some of these events are hosted in the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud, named after the French composer, a native of Aix.

Journées du Patrimoine

Open house weekend, an event that takes place across the country to celebrate France's heritage. Nationwide, the event attracts more than 12 million visitors to more than 16 000 sites and 22,000 open events.

Ironman

Athletes take part in a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.km run in this gruelling event, with the half marathon line being reached in the heart of the city centre.

Christmas Market

Wander around a number of stalls selling seasonal goods and gifts. The Cours Mirabeau is illuminated by the Christmas Market and its 50 cosy chalets display and sell a plethora of local treats. A fantastic way to welcome in the festive season.
