Uzgavenes

This traditional pre-Easter celebration takes place in the heart of Vilnius and bids farewell to a long, dark winter and welcomes the imminent arrival of spring and the warmer weather. Its colourful and vibrant traditions still continue today and it is common for young Lithuanians to dress up as devils, witches and other ghoulish characters to dance and party in the streets. It is also traditional to eat pancakes before the fasting of the Lent period.
