Jane Austen Festival

The writer Jane Austen (1775–1817) is one of Bath's most famous former residents. The writer of such classic novels as 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Mansfield Park' and 'Sense and Sensibility' spent much of her life in the town and the experience had a profound effect on her writing. In association with the Jane Austen Centre, each year Bath hosts the Jane Austen Festival which includes many literary events and Austen-themed entertainment. The festival usually opens with the popular Grand Costumed Promenade where participants, dressed in clothes typical of Austen's era, parade through the elegant streets of Bath and end up at the Royal Crescent Hotel for refreshments. Other events include readings, tours of her former home and the places that inspired her literature, food tastings and guided walks of Austen country.

Bath Literature Festival

Held in various venues in this historic spa town, the annual Bath Literature Festival attracts world-renowned authors who come to discuss their work in front of packed venues of book lovers. The festival includes readings, literary workshops and a whole raft of children's events and entertainment.

Bath Comedy Festival

A relatively new addition to Bath's festival calendar (but already a firm favourite), the Comedy Festival showcases bizarre events, humorous plays, comedians and comedy film screenings. Past appearances have included Paul Merton, Mark Thomas and Lee Hurst.

Bath Fringe Festival

Having developed in the 1980s out of earlier community festivals, the Bath Fringe Festival is one of the biggest and longest running independent fringe festivals in England. More than 170 events are staged at venues all over the city. Stand-up comedy is at the forefront of a variety of art forms and events ranging from the mainstream to the marginal. Cabaret, street theatre, indoor theatre, circus arts, dance, film and digital arts also feature in an eclectic programme. So too does music, including folk, Latin jazz, world music, pop and rock. Past performers have included Arthur Smith, Ken Campbell, Jeremy Hardy, Mark Thomas, Julian Clary, Bill Bailey, Rory Mcleod, Howard Marks and Billy Childish.

Bath International Music Festival

For two weeks at the height of summer, Bath hosts its International Music Festival during which it puts on an eclectic music programme covering everything from jazz to classical performances. Each year the festival opens with a free open-air concert which always attracts a large and enthusiastic crowd. There are many ways to enjoy the festival with free events, education projects, workshops, walks and talks. With its rich Roman history and many museums, galleries, restaurants and parks, the wonderful World Heritage city of Bath provides a great venue for this musical extravaganza which is one the most important events of its kind in the country.

Bath Guitar Festival

Guitar-heavy workshops, acoustic concerts and bands attract guitar players and enthusiasts from many countries. Venues across town host an array of concerts and events geared toward the guitar lover, and there is also a selection of master classes for those keen to improve their six-stringed craft. In 2011, popular English singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner topped a bill that also featured musicians from Cuba, across Spain and the USA.

Bath Mozartfest

Performed by some of the finest musicians in the world, the annual Bath Mozartfest presents a series of concerts of some of the great composer's best-loved works as well as some of his lesser-known pieces. The festival also includes works by other great composers such as Bach, Mendelssohn and the Chevalier de St-Georges who was known in his lifetime as 'the black Mozart'. The festival usually closes on the final night with a gala dinner at the Guildhall.

Bath Christmas Market

The famous Bath Abbey and Roman Baths provide an amazing backdrop to the city's festive event, offering visitors seasonal shopping, fine foods and family fun. Over 100 wooden chalets will be showcasing independent retailers from Bath and beyond, with a wide variety of original handcrafted gifts, decorations, cards, toys and more. In the Roman Baths Museum itself, ‘Crafts in the Drawing Room' will be selling a selection of locally handcrafted items including stoneware, wood, knitwear, ceramics and soaps.

Bath Film Festival

Over 50 screenings of films, shorts, animations and documentaries take place during the two-week festival, showcasing a mix of old classics as well as the latest art house releases. In addition to a great line-up of film screenings, there are a number of seminars and workshops that are open to all, regardless of experience. Another treat that always proves popular with film fans is the screenings of silent movies with live musical accompaniment by orchestras in the theatre - a rousing experience not to be missed,
