Al Hoota Cave

Located at the foot of the Hajar Mountains near Nizwa, Al Hoota Cave stretches for more than two kilometres, showcasing stalactites, stalagmites and an underground lake inhabited by rare blind fish. Guided tours make it accessible to most visitors and are a fascinating addition to a mountain trip.

Bahla Fort

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bahla Fort is one of Oman's most impressive historical monuments. Its vast mud-brick walls and towers rise dramatically above the oasis, recalling the region's medieval trading power. The surrounding town is also known for its traditional pottery.

Jebel Akhdar

Meaning "Green Mountain", Jebel Akhdar's terraces are lined with pomegranates, roses and apricot trees. Villages cling to the slopes, connected by ancient paths that wind through orchards and irrigated gardens. Cooler than the lowlands, it's a refreshing mountain retreat with boutique hotels and spectacular sunsets.

Jebel Shams

Known as the "Mountain of the Sun", Jebel Shams is Oman's highest peak and home to breathtaking canyons often compared to the Grand Canyon. Its rim trails and viewpoints offer panoramic vistas of sheer rock faces and deep gorges — a paradise for photographers and hikers alike.

Misfat Al Abriyeen

This ancient mountain village near Al Hamra feels frozen in time, with stone houses and narrow lanes clinging to steep terraces. The falaj irrigation system still waters lush gardens of bananas and pomegranates, offering a serene glimpse into traditional Omani life.

Musandam Peninsula

Separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, Musandam is renowned for its fjord-like coastline and crystal-clear waters. Traditional dhow cruises glide between towering cliffs and hidden coves, offering chances to spot dolphins and snorkel in sheltered bays.

Muscat

Muscat stretches between mountains and the sea, with highlights including the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the ornate Royal Opera House, and the lively Muttrah Corniche. Just inland lies the atmospheric Muttrah Souq, a maze of narrow alleys filled with silver jewellery, perfumes, textiles and handcrafted treasures, perfect for browsing or bargaining.

Nizwa

Once the capital of Oman, Nizwa remains a cultural and historical centre. Its 17th-century fort, crowned by a massive circular tower, dominates the skyline. The nearby souq bustles with traders selling pottery, dates and hand-woven goods, and Friday's lively goat market gives visitors a glimpse of enduring rural traditions.

Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

One of the few places in the world where visitors can watch sea turtles nesting year-round, this reserve provides guided night tours to see these ancient creatures lay their eggs. The experience is magical and humbling.

Salalah and Dhofar

In the far south, Salalah transforms during the khareef (monsoon) season into a lush green landscape filled with waterfalls and mist. The region's frankincense trees, beaches and ancient ruins — including Al Baleed Archaeological Park — make it one of Oman's most distinctive and rewarding destinations.

Sharqiya Sands (Wahiba Sands)

This sea of rolling red dunes is the classic Arabian desert experience. Visitors can take a 4WD ride, try sandboarding, or spend the night in a desert camp watching the sky fill with stars. The colours at sunrise and sunset are unforgettable.

Sur

A charming coastal town famed for its dhow-building heritage, Sur's traditional boatyards still handcraft wooden vessels using techniques passed down through generations. The nearby Al Ayjah Lighthouse offers panoramic views of the sea and harbour, while Ras Al Jinz, just down the coast, is a protected nesting site for green turtles.

Wadi Bani Khalid

Wadi Bani Khalid offers easier access than Wadi Shab and features deep, clear pools shaded by date palms. It's an ideal spot for picnics or a dip in cool water surrounded by desert cliffs.

Wadi Shab

Perhaps Oman's most famous wadi, Wadi Shab is a dramatic canyon where turquoise pools glisten beneath towering cliffs. A short boat ride and a scenic hike lead to waterfalls and hidden caves — a rewarding adventure that combines natural beauty with a welcome swim.
