From island-hopping in Croatia, to the mighty temples of Luxor, here are the top 5 destinations guaranteed to provide a much-needed dose of sun

Croatia

A sprawling stretch of coastline, over 1,000 islands and a mild Mediterranean climate make Croatia one of Europe’s top seaside destinations. From the historic walled cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir (all UNESCO World Heritage sites) to the rugged mountain ranges of Northern Velebit National Park, Croatia is summer’s playground. Those in search of a relaxing beach holiday can enjoy hours of sunshine stretched out on the fine golden shingle of Zlatni Rat on Brač or the sweeping pebble beach of Baška on Krk.

Dubai, UAE

With the debut of the spectacular Las Vegas-style show, La Perle by Dragone which features everything from acrobats to aquatic stunts, Dubai is hot on everyone’s lips. The Middle East’s first permanent live entertainment show aside, Dubai is the place to go for the ultimate relaxation break, with constant sunshine and hotels that offer the lap of luxury. Beach butlers serve cold towels, serene spas will leave you pampered and preened and gourmet restaurants will satisfy even the most demanding foodies. If you can tear yourself away from the sunbed, head to one of the designer-clad shopping malls for tax-free shopping.

Egypt

Egypt’s tourism industry is back in business, although parts of the country remain troubled. Stick to the advised areas, however, and you’ll be rewarded with archaeological treasures, medieval bazaars and the soaring sun. Relax on the idyllic sands of Sharm El Sheikh or explore the underwater wonders in the crystal-clear waters of lively Hurghada. Once you have had your fill of beach bliss, take a cruise up the Nile and explore the mystifying tombs and mighty temples of Luxor. Make sure to check your government’s travel advice before heading off on holiday.

Philippines

With over 7,000 islands strung out like jewels across the South China Sea, the Philippines is one of South-East Asia’s greatest treasures. And with an abundance of beaches, tranquil, warm tropical waters, coral gardens and beautiful marine life, you won’t ever want to leave. Although off the beaten track for most visitors to Asia, the Philippines benefits from a distinct lack of crowds and a stunning landscape to explore. With some of the best diving in the world, explore the underwater wrecks near the islands of Batangas, Bohol, Mindoro and Palawan. Visit the caves of Marcos Island, part of the Hundred Islands National Park, the second-largest marine reservation in the world. And if you’re after white sand beaches, try laid-back Sipalay.

Goa, India

For those in search of tropical bliss, head to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa. Goa’s accommodation options are boundless and the golden sandy beaches are a veritable paradise for sun-seekers. Arambol in the far north of the state is perhaps the most laid-back of the resorts and is blessed with miles of unspoilt beaches. Between here and the capital Panaji (Panjim) are the resort villages of Calangute, Baga and Candolim which cater more to package tourists with plenty of facilities and are popular with families. Heading south from the capital, there are many more beautiful beaches to choose from including Colva which is the most developed area along the southern circuit with luxury hotels and resorts.
