Passports

Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Malawi and have at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps.

Visas

Australian, Canadian, US and British nationals: A visa is required to enter Malawi.

EU nationals: Most EU nationals require a visa to enter Malawi, though requirements should be checked according to nationality.

Nationals of some SADC (Southern African Development Community) and COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) member states are exempt from visa requirements, subject to reciprocity arrangements.

Types and Cost

Single-entry, multiple-entry and transit visas are available. Visa fees vary according to nationality, the type of visa and the number of entries permitted. For example, a single-entry e-visa costs US$50. Travellers should check the official e-Visa website for more information.

Validity

The period of validity depends on the type of visa issued. Single-entry visas are generally valid for entry within three months of the date of issue, while multiple-entry visas may be issued with longer validity periods.

Application to

Visa applications can be made online through Malawi's official e-Visa system, the nearest Malawian embassy, high commission or consulate.

Working days

E-Visas are processed within three working days.
