Where to stay in Turkmenistan
Hotels
Accommodation in Turkmenistan is concentrated mainly in Ashgabat and a small number of regional cities. Options range from large, state-run hotels and international-standard properties in the capital to more basic hotels elsewhere. In Ashgabat, higher-end hotels tend to offer better facilities, including restaurants, Wi-Fi (often limited), and English-speaking staff, making them the most practical choice for most visitors.
Outside the capital, accommodation options are more limited and generally simpler. Regional cities such as Mary, Turkmenbashi, and Dashoguz have a small selection of hotels, usually functional rather than comfortable by international standards. Guesthouses and homestays are not widely available to foreign visitors, and independent accommodation options are rare.
Prices can be higher than expected relative to quality, particularly in Ashgabat, and availability may be restricted. Visitors should also be aware that hotels may be required to register guests with local authorities.
Camping
Camping in Turkmenistan is generally not encouraged for visitors.
