Imlek (Chinese New Year)

Celebrated by Indonesia's Chinese communities, the annual Lunar New Year celebrations are the biggest and most popular event in the Chinese social calendar. The time of the year for a fresh start and new beginnings, many Indonesians celebrate the occasion with friends, family and loved ones. Visitors during this period can enjoy a great atmosphere that includes lion and dragon dances, fireworks and food and drinks stalls. Although not a public holiday, many Chinese-owned businesses will be closed for at least one day over this period.

Jakarta International Jazz Festival

Attracting bands and performers from all over the world, the annual Jakarta International Jazz Festival (JJF) is one of the biggest music festivals of its kind in the region. The three-day event includes performances on multiple stages at the Jakarta Convention Center and in the past has welcomed such artists as James Brown, Earth, Wind and Fire and Jhene Aiko to the stages. In addition to many big names from the international stage, the program also includes plenty of local artists and homegrown talents.

Hari Proklamasi Indonesia (Independence Day)

Hari Proklamasi is an Indonesian celebration that remembers the proclamation of independence which brought an end to over 350 years of Dutch colonial rule. Events take place throughout the region and particularly in the capital city, Jakarta. The most spectacular of the events is the military parade and a solemn flag-raising ceremony which is attended by the President and other members of the cabinet. Other less formal events take place all over Indonesia ranging from cultural performances to sporting events.
