Visas
Most foreign nationals require a visa to visit Nepal. Tourist visas can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at most major land border crossings, or applied for online in advance through Nepal’s official e-visa system. Citizens of SAARC countries (except India) are eligible for reduced visa fees but still need a visa. Indian citizens, however, do not require a visa to enter Nepal and may travel using approved identity documents such as a passport or voter ID card. Travellers from a small number of countries not eligible for visa on arrival must obtain a visa beforehand from a Nepali embassy or consulate.
Types and Cost
Visa on arrival fees for Nepal are USD 30 for a 15-day tourist visa, USD 50 for a 30-day visa, and USD 125 for a 90-day visa. These rates apply to most nationalities eligible for visa on arrival, while SAARC citizens (except India) benefit from reduced fees.
Validity
Tourist visas for Nepal are available for 15, 30 or 90 days, depending on the fee paid.
Transit
Transit passengers who remain airside at Tribhuvan International Airport and continue their journey within the same day do not require a visa. However, travellers who need to leave the airport during a layover, stay overnight, or clear immigration for any reason must obtain a tourist visa, either on arrival if eligible, or in advance. Nepal does not issue a separate transit-only visa category.
Application to
Visitors can apply for a Nepali tourist visa in three ways: on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at most major land border crossings; online in advance via Nepal's official e-visa system; or at a Nepali embassy or consulate abroad. Travellers from nationalities not eligible for visa on arrival must apply through an embassy or consulate before travelling.
Working days
Visa processing for Nepal is usually quick. Applications made on arrival are typically issued within minutes, depending on queue length. E-visa applications submitted online are often approved within a few working days, though travellers should apply at least a week in advance during busy seasons. Applications made at Nepali embassies or consulates may take longer, especially for nationalities requiring prior approval.
